One day in a small
fishing village in Okinawa, a very poor fisherman went to sea to
cast his net. The fishing had been very poor and everyone in
his village were very hungry. When he brought his net up, he
had a very large fish in it. As he brought the fish into the
boat, the fish spoke. The fish said, please release me and I
will grant you three wishes. The fisherman was skeptical, he
said, now wait a minute, if I keep you, I could feed my whole
village for a week. The fish replied, if you use my wishes
wisely, you can feed them forever. The fisherman thought for
a moment, then said, well, I don't know if I can believe you, but
then again, I have never seen a fish talk before either.
With that, he returned the fish to the sea. The fish rose up
out of the water and said, return tomorrow to this same place and
the same time and I will grant you your first wish. The
fisherman stayed awake all night trying to decide on his wish.
At daybreak, he rowed out to the spot where he left the fish.
Sure enough the fish returned. The fisherman told him that
he wanted the people in his village to never be hungry again, the
fish replied, granted, come tomorrow for your second wish.
When the fisherman returned to his village, he saw everyone happy
and more food that he had ever seen. Again the fisherman
stayed up all night trying to think of the perfect wish. On
the next day he rowed out to the meeting place and waited, again
the fish appeared. For my second wish the fisherman replied,
I would like everyone in my village to be richer beyond anyone's
dreams. The fish replied, granted, for your final wish come
to this same spot tomorrow. When the fisherman returned to
the village, he saw everyone rich and happy. The
fisherman knew that this was very important as it was his last
wish. On the next day he returned to the spot in the
sea. He waited all day far into the night, the fish did not
appear. The next day he rowed to the spot again. He
waited all day and into the night again. Again the fish did
not appear. On the third day, the fisherman was getting very
upset, he got up on the bow of his boat and shouted, you
dumb stupid fish, I wish I had never caught you in my net, you
have made my life miserable this last week, with that, the fish
rose out of the water and said, your wish is granted.
The moral? Be careful what you wish for.
